Elephant Skin marks the beginning of Dirk van der Kooij’s longstanding love affair with recycled plastic. Plain, faceless sheets of recycled black plastic caught his attention as perfect fodder for manipulation. By way of a self-developed oven, Dirk found ways to foster honest textural expression in this anonymous material. The plastic was heated and then cooled outside of a mould, which encouraged the material to wrinkle and contract into a vividly organic structure. The ultimate imitator had finally found an identity of its own.
